We alter/lengthen bed rails to accommodate the length of modern mattresses. Now full size mattresses are 75″ long and Queen size mattresses are 80″long, but many antique bed-rails are 70 to72 inches long. 100 years ago people were shorter and so mattresses were shorter. Most antique metal beds have bed rails that are too short. Sometimes a steel hammer is necessary Only to Remove or Uninstall the bed rail. We use a rubber mallet to install bed rails. A hammer can break the bed or the bed rail. When Installing a bed rail on an iron bed NEVER USE A HAMMER. Finding a fit can take a few emails and samples sent to confirm a good fit. The many differences of tapered pin rails include (which is basically a metal cone) the size of the top in relation to the size of the bottom, the distance the cone is from the “block or flat part ” of the rail, and some have more taper than others. While many appear similar they are not alike. Each manufacturer made their own rails to fit only their beds. When these bed were made 150 to 100 years ago there was no industry standard for bed rail connection systems.
